In 1957, the Japan Design Promotion Association established the Good Design Award, which aimed to revitalize Japanese society and economy through design. Over the past 60 years, the Good Design Award has witnessed the rapid development of the Japanese economy and has made Japan a representative of excellent global design through its promotion and revitalization of design. Today, the Good Design Award has become a globally renowned design award.
The Good Design Select is the first exhibition in China that selects the excellent award-winning works of the Good Design Award based on a theme. As the curator of this exhibition, I am honored to bring this world-class design award to China in the form of "SELECT". Through the three sections of History, Longevity, and Excellent Design, the Good Design Award will be fully presented to audience.
Since 2011, many unexpected events have occurred, such as earthquakes and the global pandemic, which have caused enormous casualties and losses. We who have witnessed and are experiencing all this should consider "what can we do now" and "what is really necessary now". A change in values is happening at this moment. This has become an opportunity for the Good Design Award to rethink the question of "what is good design?"
The success of the Good Design Select in Shenzhen, China, is due to the full support and cooperation of the Japan Design Promotion Association, a public-interest foundation, as well as the enthusiastic invitation and strong support from the "Design Shenzhen" team. I also want to thank my team at 2-LA DESIGN for their hard work in this exhibition. Of course, the most deserving of thanks are the excellent award-winning works and their designers, who have shown us how design can make life better and more meaningful.
I hope that the audience of the Good Design Select, whether you are a design professional or not, can use this exhibition as a starting point to pay more attention to the "things" and "matters" around us, actively explore and think about the possibility of solving various problems that fill our lives with the development and changes of the times and society, and continue to explore "what is good design?" together.
